Unity Space

2016

Sweden is one of the few countries in Europe that has provided protection to a large number of refugees fleeing the war zones of Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Despite its relatively small population of 10 million, Sweden had the highest number of individuals seeking asylum per capita (163,000) in Europe in 2015. The large number of refugees who have gained residence in Sweden over the past couple of years constitute a major challenge to Swedish society and, especially to the Swedish labor market. According to a recent report from the OECD, only 22% of newly-arrived men and 8% of women had employment after one or two years of introductory programs.
Unity Space aims to speed up the process and provide refugees a strong chance of finding a job. Other than the job opportunities the space will serve as an exhibition, a gathering spot, and a design beacon. By providing 7 (4x2,5 m) mobile units, the needs of the organizers and the users will be satisfied. Each unit can be divided into two pieces in order to facilitate different programs and can be easily located in any environment. By using light materials, each unit can be moved easily by one person. Also, the connection of the pieces are chosen from basic and strong connectors which need
minimum or no maintenance.

The exhibition is mainly aiming at what the individuals coming from different countries and cultures have achieved before. The main purpose is to give hope to the refugees by showing how their precedessers succeeded. These successful individuals would also have classes and seminars about opportunities, chances and risks.
